Name that Movie
Ok, film geeks. Bill Simmon is 3 for 3. Hopefully not this week.
Last week’s film was the French film, ‘Le Cercle Rouge’ (1970), directed by Jean-Pierre Mellvile. This classic film involves a cat-loving detective, a recently released thief, and an escaped murderer, with one heck of a jewel heist. As Norbizness pointed out, Hong Kong action director John Woo oversaw its restoration. You can read a bunch about this great film, here. And the Obligatory Stupid Trivia Question answer (also answered by Bill) was the connection between this film and several famous spaghetti westerns was the late actor Gian Maria Volonte, who plays the escaped murderer Vogel in this film; he also played the bad guy in the first two films of Sergio Leone’s ‘Dollars’ trilogy, A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More.
So here’s this week’s movie:
Title, year, and director, please. Extra credit if you can describe what’s going on in the scene. And the Obligatory Stupid Trivia Question: What (very loose) connection does this film have to actress Goldie Hawn? Fire away.

ouch. You are a devious bastard, Ryan. Before answering all of the previous ones, I was 100% sure I was correct. This time, I’m not as positive. The reason I’m unsure is that you implied that you were going to go really obscure this week, and if I’m right about what film this frame is from, it’s arguably the least obscure film you’ve posted yet. Here’s my guess:
film: Scarecrow
year: 1973
director: Jerry Schatzberg
Regarding your bonus questions, I can’t answer for certain, so I asked my friend Greg for a little help and he replied:
That’s the scene where Hackman’s character offers a meatloaf wrapped in his hobo hat to a hooker as payment in lieu of $ as he’s too poor. Pacino is disgusted and says that no ho is worth the meat loaf they been saving since they stole it from the dining car dumpster two states back. The meatloaf was made by Goldie Hawn’s hairdresser.
What do we win????
Hmm.. I erred in thinking this movie was more obscure than it actually was. I’m a big Pacino fan, and only recently heard of this. Shame on me.
So, yeah, you’re 4 for 4. I need to better get down the ‘obscure’ thing, or start picking screenshots that aren’t so obvious…I’m learnin’, I’m learnin’.
I believe you’re wrong about the extra credit question… the Goldie Hawn connection was Eileen Brennan who plays the obnoxious hooker in the bar who gets into a fight with Hackman’s character. She also played the CO in Hawn’s ‘Private Benjamin’.
Check back next Wed. Now I know what I need to do….
You win… my continued humiliation for the 4th week in a row…
