I gotta get me this clock! Jack Nicholson pops through the door every hour. (h/t Popcorn and Sticky Floors)

fun clock from \

When I was a little kid, and a rather early reader, I remember reading Stephen King’s “The Shining” under my bedcovers with a flashlight, and having it scare the living shit out of me. The 1980 Kubrick movie, although not an accurate representation of the book, was nevertheless a stylized, scary-as-hell romp through madness, and I’m still traumatized from Scatman Crothers getting the axe in the chest. You can’t kill Scatman, that ain’t right! Stephen King himself never cared for the film, and reshot a more accurate film account almost 20 years later. However, it was a miniseries for network tv, so it was highly sanitized as most of those affairs usually are, and not all that exciting, especially in comparison to the Kubrick film.

Anyways, the Guardian is reporting about a neat advert playing on the BBC’s channel 4 for a Kubrick retrospective week they have coming up. In the ad, they meticulously recreated some of the soundstage of the movie, as well as cast lookalikes for the cast and crew. If you’re not very familiar with the film, it probably won’t float your willies, but if you are, it’s a real treat, giving you a lot of “oh, there’s that!” moments. Check it out here.

I can’t believe any of my fellow bloggers didn’t come up with the above obvious headline. Cue the eye-rolling and the sound of the smacking forehead.

I unfortunately didn’t see this happen, as I was busy prostituting my musical services at the time for something I’d rather forget, but someone finally gave Governor Douglas a pie in the face at the Montpelier Independence Day parade.  It was Santa Claus, giving us all a nice early Christmas present. It was a whipped-cream pie. Only thing that sucks is it shoulda been a maple cream cowshit pie.

Music industry proposes “piracy tax”

And the madness never ends with the recording industry. Some are finally starting to catch up to the new technology and media, others are stuck in the stone ages. And many of them simply fail to realize that they’d make a lot more money if they stopped selling so much one-hit-wonder garbage. THe latest nonsense?  From Broadband Reports:

Last week the music industry caused serious waves by announcing they’d created a new organization tasked with trying to implement a music “piracy tax.” In essence, users would pay their ISP $5-$10 a month for the right to download, copy and share as much music as they’d like without restrictions. Or at least that’s the sales pitch; it’s hard to believe the music industry’s implementation of such a plan wouldn’t have serious flaws.

Yep. You read right. Your ISP would charge you an additional $5-$10 a month, even if you don’t file share (for someone like me, however, this would be a bargain, I guess). The big dilemma here is that filesharing is not going to go away, and there needs to be some sort of mechanism in place where the artists can be duly compensated for that. I don’t have a problem with that, but like many I do have a problem with Digital Rights Management and all of the other bullshit schemes that severely limit what you can do with the media that you paid for.
