A gift from the forest

My house is on a pretty big hill, and the elevation where I’m at is about 1400′ above sea level. There’s some pretty strong winds up here from time to time, with the worst being a few years ago when my tarp garage uprooted and blew into the side of my house, and then my brother and I spent some rather difficult time trying to drag it into the woods and wedge it in between some trees so it would stop moving.

Anyways, I heat with wood, and whenever we have one of those big windstorms, sometimes I hear the crack of a tree that just couldn’t cut it. When I go out and investigate, 99% of the time, it’s a balsam or some other kind of softwood that I wouldn’t burn. I’m always hoping some massive maple or other hardwood will come down, but it’s very rare. So today, as the winds were quite incredible, I heard a loud crack out back and then suddenly a bunch of green leaves were blowing around. I went and looked, and two maples bought the farm, nowhere near the house and in a location that was very easy to get to.  I’ll get a good amount of wood out of it. Thanks, forest.
